Mutual Aid Emergency Food Aid at the PCC (Pakistan Community Centre).
The Food hub has been set up to offer emergency food parcels and is based at the Pakistan Community Centre within the Mapesbury area. It is a small scale, local operation to provide food parcels to residents in need within Mapesbury and the surrounding wards quickly and efficiently, with delivery and collection through a network of local volunteers.
The hub will provide additional support to existing food banks and act as a filler for those residents in need until a more permanent arrangement can be put in place from other food banks. We have noticed lots of existing local support networks ie: community centres, churches etc. have sadly closed due to the Covid-19 virus. We are providing a local option of food parcels on a non referral basis that the Mutual Aid volunteers can distribute. The idea is not to replace current infrastructures already in place but to assist and provide emergency parcels and fill the gaps.
The centre is for anyone in need of an urgent food parcel, although those living in neighbouring wards may have access to a food hub local to them that may be more convenient.
A Just Giving webpage has been set up to accept donations from local residents with funds going towards the emergency food boxes processed at the PCC. This is a short term solution and in reaction to the need during this period. Any funds left over from the Just Giving page will be passed on to other foodbanks.
Local residents can also donate food directly via the PCC.
The food hub sent out 50+ food parcels last week and we estimate that number to increase throughout the next couple of weeks.
The centre is open between 4-6pm Mon-Sat and offers food parcels to anyone who needs them. Only the volunteers on duty are allowed in the centre to maintain social distancing and limit cross contamination. The process is simple and works well.
· A request for a food parcel is received, logged on a request form, and the information is added to a master spreadsheet
· The volunteer on duty at the PCC will access the spreadsheet, process the food parcel and leave ready for collection
· The volunteer named on the form will collect the box and deliver to local residents
We plan to create a Facebook page and news letter to increase awareness, promote the service and provide additional communication channels. It also allows us to thank those who have donated, demonstrate where the money goes, and show the difference it makes to neighbours and locals in need in this difficult time.
